2004 49th Annual Fiesta Regatta

April 24 , 2004

As the week went on prior to the 49th Annual Fiesta Regatta, the weather forecast for the weekend was not good. But as with all Woodlawn events the show must go on and besides we’re sailors and meant to get wet. Saturday morning was blessed with blue skies and breaking clouds that brought thoughts of “we just might luck out!” After set-up was completed and breakfast was set up by Charlotte & Paul Kahl, it was time to race. Bob Taylor was once again our Race Chairman, and after our typical racing mark set-up technique of saying “just throw on over there, and over there!” we we’re set for just about any wind direction. With winds about 5 -10mph out of the north and of course shifty, it was a challenge. With 6 boats in Gold and 4 in Silver, the field was set for some fun racing. All local WSC members registered with our youngest being Gretchen Lindeman (age 4), and  Bill Gerloff from Austin joining us. We had set up our usual Gold and Silver Fleet with one start this year with 10 boats on the line. Bob and assistant Lou Bowen did a great job with signals and starts. Two races were run with a break between them for the weary. Lunch of course is always a big deal at Woodlawn with our never ending food supply. Organized and prepared by Gene & Rana Camargo and kitchen set up by Mama Seta and Charlotte, the menu of course for the Fiesta flair was Fajita with all the fixings. Back to racing after lunch for another 6 races with even a rain downpour for about 5 minutes before the start of one race. But like I said , we’re sailors, and the rain wouldn’t stop us. As the folks up at the clubhouse was high and dry and amused at what it looked like with all the boats out there during the downpour. As quick as it(rain) started , it ended and racing continued. I glad to say that nobody went for a swim this year as the winds were quite calm, but it was nice to have winds for all races. After racing was completed after 8 total, it was time for trophies. This years trophies were made by Paul Kahl. As with every regatta we host we have our “Special Finisher” award for the highest points total with finishing all races. This year going to Marty Besosa. See below for results. Thank you for who came out to enjoy the day and renew your Membership dues for the 2005 year. Of course it’s never t late to this by sending your dues to Mike Minerva if you haven’t made to the lake lately for a regatta. It’s been a busy April with two Regatta in a three week period. Next year will be the 50th annual for the Fiesta Regatta, we are planning a bigger and special event for next year.
