New Y-Dock Under Construction

September 24th - New Y-Dock Construction

The New Y-Dock is near completion.  The boards on the North and South Ys still need to be screwed to the middle stringers of the dock, the barge needs to be moved back in place and the construction canisters and fencing need to be moved off the lot.   City employees have apparently attached a toe rail as requested.  This feature was not included in the original contract with Amstar.  Hopefully the city will recognize that by placing the toe rail 6 inches inside of the edge of the dock they have just sacrificed a foot of dock space.  Further, by making the toe rail 6 inches wide the 10 foot dock now only has 8 usable feet of width.  We are also hopeful that the city will treat the toe rail wood so that it does not rot out in a couple of years and become a hazard.

September 17th - New Y-Dock Construction

The folks at Amstar Construction are working hard to finish up the new dock in time for the Alamo Classic!  Club members have reported seeing construction crews working on the dock late into the evening.  The lumber being used has a 1/8" thick brown coating that forms a hard shell and looks to be top notch!   See the latest photo's below:

If you haven’t been out the lake lately you wouldn’t know that we are finally getting our new Y- Dock. After working with the City Park and Recreation New Projects Department for the last 5 years, they have come up with a way to fund the complete demo & reconstruct the Y- Dock this year. By creatively placing this scope of work in with another “Improvement” Contract, they were able to find a contractor. Amstar Construction, of San Antonio was awarded the project. It was a combination of the improvements to the Gymnasium, New Playground Equipment, new ADA sidewalks, and the Y-Dock that all this work could be done in 2006. The dock itself has basically been left to the last, with demolition and reconstruction to have just started last week.  It was Amstar Construction  that graciously gave us, the Sailing Club only, exclusive use of the docks last year for our Alamo Classic Victoria Regatta when the sidewalk and parking lot work was also going on.  For this we continue to Thank them. The new docks will be 10’feet wide instead of the current 5’ feet and ADA Compliant. They will be constructed out of all new state of the art materials. I have been told that all work on the docks will be complete by this Sept 22. Given the fact that the 2nd Annual Alamo Classic Victoria Regatta is scheduled for Columbus Day Weekend just a few days later, you can be assured that I will keep close tabs on the construction progress.  - Ray Seta
