Sunday, January 20th, 8:36pm - Final Message from Mark Cooper, Commodore of the Clearpoint Model Yacht Club
Well good evening all.
I am sorry this is just now getting posted but
needless to say I dropped when I returned home after what turned out to be
an absolutely awesome weekend of sailing and camaraderie.
As the
title says, Woodlawn's Captain Jack Sparrow Wins Regatta. I will leave that
to be explained by something later but here are the results of today's final
action.
1st Place: Geoff Becker - 35 Points 2nd Place: Hew Hamilton -
39 Points 3rd Place: Al Ross - 59 Points 4th Place: Ron Stephanz - 60
Points 5th Place: Capt. Ray Seta - 66 Points
Can you say close, close,
close.
Today we started the morning as a good "Frostbite" should with a
32 degree setting on my car as I arrived lakeside at 7:00 a.m. and a
frozen covered ground. Ice was all over my car and as I took the Kayak
off the roof apparently the water inside the Kayak that had leaked in was
also frozen solid. WOW!!! True to the forecast we were greeted with North
Easterly winds about 10 to 15 with some gusts. This slightly changed over
the day to a more Easterly and then South Easterly direction making setting
a course difficult and skippers having to be on their toes to handle the
conditions. Brad Lauterbach did an outstanding job once again setting a very
enjoyable to watch course and the winds did the rest. Skippers experienced
wonderful winds with some heavier gusts at times but allowing us to have
10-minute races all day long. With 2 days of sailing we ended up sailing 40
individual races or 20 heats with 2 throw outs. YEOW!!!
All
witnessed some of the most competitive sailing and some very close finishes
at times. Obviously Al had a fantastic day and gained ground to take the 3rd
Place away from Ron. What a fantastic weekend and "Frostbite 2008" is now in
the books.
As mentioned last night's shindig at Clearpoint Church was a
hoot and I have already mentioned the extra ingredients that were placed
into certain drinks unknown by me. One thing that needs to be mentioned
is that our Capt. Ray Seta made a special announcement to us that we are
now able to pass on to you.
Nationals 2008 will release the NOR on May
1st followed by Priority Registration on July 1st and Open Registration on
August 1st. This will be indeed a "SHOW" for all ages so be prepared.
Region 5 has some wonderful events held during the year and I also
want to be sure to include our next MAJOR event "White Rock Cup" which
is already registering NOW. This is a wonderful event that helps sponsor
Spina Bifida. Sign up today and be apart of a CLASSIC EVENT!!! You will not
be sorry.
Did I mention camaraderie... Well that could not be truer
than what I witnessed this weekend. I witnessed some of the best skippers in
this event take the time to repair, tune and help many of those who
needed it especially some of our first time Victoria Skippers. This just
shows what a great group of skippers that this Class has to offer and I
thank those of you who did so.
Final race by race and report will be
posted early this week and will keep you posted when it does.
THANKS
to all competitors for making the "Frostbite" 2008 so memorable and
exciting. Looking forward to next year.
Good Sailing

Saturday, January 19th, 10pm - Message from Mark Cooper, Commodore Clearpoint Model Yacht Club
Good Evening All.
Well Phil summed up the what we had this morning
perfectly and WOW did it blow as I arrived lakeside with gusts easily
reaching 30 mph in some spots. OUCH! It was COLD, COLD, COLD (33 degrees on
my car) but you know what this is "Frostbite" and once again we made ready
for competitors. After last nights unofficial festivities at Willies Ice
House needless to say some slept in till the very last minute to turn up
lakeside.
Wind was picture perfect by the time skippers began racing
with gusts easily in the 15 to 20 but slowly during the day settling to a
very brisk and wonderful speed that most everyone could handle. Sailing
was at a premium with excellent and some exciting close finishes being
had. Being prepared to sail these conditions was key. Day 1 finished tonight
with the annual Bar-B-Que Social and once again raffle. This was a great
evening needless to say with some fun, fellowship and humor to boot.
Everyone seemed to get full with delicious food and beverages. If they ever
find out what was flowing secretly during the evening at the church I am
sure I will be fired. Lol...
Thanks to some wonderful generosity we
had wonderful raffle prizes with a complete Vic Rig and Sails, hand made
wooden custom boat stand as well as Victoria Kit donated by a very generous
Brian Sims of Vision Sails. THANKS BRIAN... If if was not for people and
vendors such as Brian we would not be fortunate to have our supplies like we
have.
I was unfortunately unable to grab a copy of the scores
tonight but the top 3 are Geoff Becker, Hew Hamilton and Ron Stephanz. The
scoring is very close between these 3 and several other skippers are
several points behind. We have sailed 22 races or 11 heats today with 1
throw out so far. Can you say fast and furious racing. Brad Lauterbach is
running the show and doing an outstanding job of keeping everone on the
water.
Tomorrow, weather looks to be once again cold but wind direction
could prove to be difficult if forecast holds true. Only time will tell
and I will give a report tomorrow night as soon as I can. Until
tomorrow...
Good Sailing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Saturday, January 19th, 7pm - 9pm - The official Saturday night dinner was held at the Clearpoint Church. As always Mark Cooper provided an outstanding dinner buffet of brisket, sausage, beans, potato salad and Texas pickles - (jalapenos). Top notch raffle prizes kept everyone drooling over the chance to take home some wonderful goodies.... In the photos below, can you tell why we refer to Mark Cooper as Father Mark?

Friday, January 18th, 10:00pm - The 'unofficial official' (or is it the other way around?) Friday night get together was held this evening at Willie's Grill with 28 folks from 7 different states filling out our party. We all had a great time catching up with old friends and getting to know a few new sailing buddies as well.
Here are a few photos of the Friday night dinner provided by Hew Hamilton:
Skippers meeting starts at 9:30am tomorrow morning. Check back tomorrow night for additional updates.

Friday, January 18th, 4:00pm - The Pirates of Woodlawn have arrived in Pasadena for the Victoria Frostbite Regatta! Our first stop was at Burke/Crenshaw Park where the event's sponsor, Mark Cooper, from the Clearpoint Model Yacht Club was busily setting up marks and preparing to check in boats. As it was raining, windy and 40 something degrees the Pirates decided to head on down to a local restaurant and then check into our hotel instead of tuning our boats. I sure hope it ain't like this tomorrow!!!!!!
