The 2006 51st Annual
Sunfish Fiesta Regatta

What a perfect sailing day for the Sunfish Fiesta Regatta. When club members got to the lake early for set-up, there was not a breath of wind to be had on the lake. But by race time at 12 noon, winds were puffy and consistent out of the west at 10-15mph, just like the weather man said it would be. Larry Ludwig once again step up for us and wanted to run Race Committee duty for the second time this month. But this time it was with real boats and a real starting line and committee boat. So with help from his trusty sidekick Eric Gregory it was time for them to venture out to the race course. Given the ballast of those two and an extra slab of asphalt form the parking lot as an anchor, it was quite a sight seeing that boat sitting so low in the water. And then when Eric wanting to play webmaster and get the best on-the-water photos for the website he could, you could see the scare in Larry’s eyes whenever Eric would stand up in the small boat to get that perfect shot.

The course was set perfect for the just below white capping winds with a windward start, then planning reaches, and ending with a long windward leg. Each race took about 25 minutes with all 8 boats starting at once and at least on boat turning over in every race. With two races run back-to-back then a break it seems a perfect schedule to get 6 races, lunch and trophies awarded by 5:30.  It was great to see the regulars that seem to show up once a year for this event no matter what, all saying they wouldn’t miss it for the world. And we do appreciate there support. Mark Martin, from Pflugerville, TX will always make the trip he says. Marty Besosa, long time member, we haven’t seen in  few years was back. Doug Sanford, new sailor from Canyon Lake and Seta’s next door neighbors some 35 years ago joined us. I remember giving Doug a ride in a Sunfish that many years ago and the bug must of stuck, cause now he owns a boat and lives at Canyon Lake, and sails all the time now. He says he’ll be back more often now to Woodlawn. Dave Froberg, enjoyed last years 50th Fiesta Regatta so much he decided to now make it an annual event for him. Great to see Kevin MacCarthy back for another year, son of Bill McCarthy. And of course our regulars, Terry Lindeman, Charlotte Kahl, and myself rounded out the Gold and Silver Fleet. Charlotte is retiring form competitive racing now and wanted to go out with a bang and a trophy. Well the bang was that she was one of the few boats that didn’t go over and stayed dried all day while the rest of us went for swims at one point or another. Her trophy came as the coveted “Special Finisher” award for the highest points in the regatta and finishing every race.

There were a couple of highlights for the day also. One was when myself, leading in a race rounding the downwind mark, flipped the boat as a freak wild gust of wind hit at the point of myself gybing and just threw the boat for a loop. I was laughing so hard when I was diving into the sail. That was the only picture that Eric really wanted! The first flip of the day was Marty at 12:16 pm. We had only hit the water at Noon! Another highlight was when I was leading the race and covering my competition hard all the way to the finish with all three boat with in feet of each other at the finish and I did the bonehead move of hitting the Finish Committee boat, only to re-round and finish behind Terry and Dave with in feet of me. Exciting to say the least! Club members on shore under the WSC shade were entertained all day with all the drama of racing and skippers going swimming.

Of course the tradition of food and BBQ is the norm for us at Fiesta. MamaSeta, of course, always takes the honors of the menu and set up. Tony Seta mans the BBQ, and Mando and Eric helping with Set-up, and of course there’s always PapaSeta supervising, on plumbing patrol, and directing everyone except MamaSeta. Thank you to all who came out and enjoyed the day and especially Thanks to the sailors that make it all worth planning for. See ya next year! Results and Photos by Eric below.
