- Saturday's Synopsis: What a great day
with temps in the 70's light winds from NW to NE
at 0-6mph, John Oliveira(RD) had his hands full.
Getting off 16 heats(8 races) before 5 PM was
quite an accomplishment. With 27 boats
registered, the odd/even system of heats worked
perfectly. With wireless technology for the PA
system and a crack set of scoring girls, it was
pure pleasure hearing your sail # announced for
the next heat everytime. As of Saturday night
here are the rankings. Complete race by race
results will be posted on the WSC site soon
after tomorrow races.

The only other highlight I wanted to mention was
the Chili cook-off sponsored by the Charles
Sudduth group from Dallas. I can't even begin to
tell ya how much they had in terms of quantity.
What better judges can we have than to have the
ones that think they know the most about Texas
chili than the three out of towners Tom
Kern(NJ), Ron Stephanz(AL), and Bruce Pyles(WA).
These guys had their fill and came up with a
winner. We had so much chili that I think
even the lakes ducks are going to get their
fill. Full story to be written by Ron
Stephanz with their list of winners, to include
"The Most like Taco Bell's", a New Jersey
special.
Good Winds and happy Chili!

Recap of Saturday Nights Chili
Cook-Off:
We(WSC)
Can not tell you what a great feeling it is to
have Victoria friends that not only want to come
and race at Woodlawn but will step up and
volunteer to help put the event on. We must be
doing something right to have such great friends
in the Victoria Class. The following
is a report filed by Ron Stephanz(2005 Alamo
Classic Champion & now Texas Chili
Connoisseur)......enjoy a special part of this
event:
The Inaugural Alamo Classic Victoria Regatta
combined two days of exciting Victoria racing
with a new twist: a chili cook-off. Charles
Sudduth from the Les Lacs Yacht Club convinced
six other skippers from the Addison club to make
a batch of their favorite chili to share with
the contestants, regatta staff, Woodlawn
volunteers, stray pirates and even the local
constable at the regatta. Saturday evening
after the conclusion of the day's racing, the
proverbial "feed bag" was tied on. Not
only were batteries on charge throughout the
day, but also the chili pots were
simmering as well. All this combined to
overcome the Woodlawn Sailing Club's electrical
system. The electrician was called and he saved
the day by restoring power in time for all the
chili entries to simmer to their proper degrees
of atomic heat. The chili entries were lined up
with all their fixins, ready for the keen eyes,
noses and tastebuds of the judges. A side note:
the judges were appointed based upon their
geographic distance from the great state of
Texas, not upon any prior experience in the
field of Texas gastronomy. The judges were
Tom Kern from New Jersey, Bruce Pyles from
Washington state and yours truly, Ron Stephanz
from Alabama. The judges gathered before the
competition to determine which categories would
be used in determining the winners. In order to
not influence the judges in any way, the chili
entries were numbered in the absence of the
chefs. Heavy sampling of the entries took
place, with copious amounts of water consumed to
cleanse the palette. The following
categories were chosen and the winner for each
category:
SPICIEST - Bob Piper
MEATIEST - Charles Sudduth
BEST BEANS - Thomas Swann (entry #1)
BEST APPEARANCE - Marvin Burrows
BEST AROMA - Jerry McBride
BEST OVERALL - Thomas Swann (entry #2)
and finally, the MYSTERY category (most like
Taco Bell) - Bob Harmon.
Thank you to all the chefs for their
participation and good nature. The chili was
great and the effort put into this event was
greatly appreciated. Continuing the
tradition at Woodlawn - no one went home hungry!
